Program Objectives (ABET)

The Aerospace Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, Inc. That accreditation includes consideration of the program's educational objectives and student outcomes:

Educational Objectives

The Aerospace Engineering program’s educational objectives are based on the mission of the department to have graduates who are successful in their careers, achieve advanced degrees, attain leadership roles in their profession, and continue to improve their abilities through life-long learning. These program educational objectives are defined by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as “what graduates are expected to attain within a few years of graduation”. The educational objectives of the AE undergraduate program are for the graduates to achieve the following:

  1. To obtain employment in industry, government institutions, small businesses, or organizations successfully using the skills they acquired in aerospace engineering and related fields.
  2. To pursue graduate degrees and conduct research at universities.
  3. To advance in their careers and achieve leadership and management positions within the profession.
  4. To continue their professional development utilizing educational and career building opportunities through their employer, educational institutions, or professional societies.
  5. To contribute to the advancement of aerospace engineering, science or related fields through new discoveries, solving problems, program management or by educating/mentoring others.
  6. To be engaged in professional societies and community service.

Student Outcomes

The student outcomes for each graduate are:

  • an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
  • an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
  • an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
  • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
  • an ability to communicate effectively
  • the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
  • a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • a knowledge of contemporary issues
  • an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
