Free "October Sky" film screening, student exhibits and panel discussion

october sky posterCome enjoy the 1999 classic film "October Sky" on Sun. Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Theatre in Champaign. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Homer Hickam, a coal miner’s son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry and went on to become an engineer at NASA. The film is rate PG and based on Hickam’s 1998 memoir entitled Rocket Boys.

The Virginia Theatre doors will open at 1 p.m. to allow plenty of time to view student organization project exhibits and talk with aerospace engineering students in the lobby of the theatre about why they are pursuing an education in aerospace engineering. 

After the movie, hear from a panel of aerospace engineering students about what sparked their interest in the subject, what challenges they had to overcome, and what they hope to do in their future careers.

This event is hosted by the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Illinois and the Illinois Space Grant Consortium. It is free to attend.
