NASA Illinois Space Grant Fellowship

These fellowships are awarded to entering and continuing students by the Department of Aerospace Engineering. For entering students, selection is based on application and supporting documents. Awards to continuing students are based on academic and research performance. Selection of fellowship recipients is made by the Board of Directors of the Illinois Space Grant Consortium.

GAANN Fellowships

These three-year fellowships are awarded to existing or new graduate students.  The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and must be pursuing or planning to pursue a PhD with a research emphasis on Space.  These fellowships are competitive and based on both the academic excellence of the candidate and their financial need.

Illinois Distinguished Fellowships

These three-year fellowships are awarded by the Graduate College to entering graduate students. Only 15 are given across the University of Illinois campus each year. The department nominates applicants to this program based on their application for admission and supporting documents.

SURGE Fellowships

These fellowships are given by the College of Engineering to women and underrepresented students in the engineering area. The department nominates applicants to this program based on their application for admission and supporting documents.

Roy S. Carver Fellowship

These prestigious one-year fellowships are awarded by the College of Engineering to entering master’s degree and doctoral degree students. Only six Carver fellowships are given across the engineering campus. The department nominates applicants to this program based on their application for admission and supporting documents. Applicants must demonstrate a strong potential to pursue graduate programs in the College of Engineering successfully by exhibiting a solid and comprehensive understanding of basic and engineering science principles, outstanding creativity, and an exceptional potential to conduct innovative research.

Mavis Memorial Fund Scholarship (MMFS) Awards for Doctoral Students

This fellowship is awarded by the College of Engineering to entering and continuing PhD students who have demonstrated an aptitude for the instructional program. It is intended to encourage students to pursue an academic career. Applications are solicited from students and faculty and the department’s Graduate Awards Committee makes the official nomination to the Graduate College.

Funding for the Robert Beatty Fellowships was given to the College of Engineering by the University of Illinois Urbana—Champaign to benefit students who are pursuing graduate degree in aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical engineering. Mr. Beatty was a graduate of the University of Illinois’ Institute of Aviation, and earned two degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering – a BS in ’69 and an MS in ’71. These fellowships are awarded by the Department of Aerospace Engineering to top incoming graduate students.

H.S. Stillwell

Stillwell Fellowships

In 1944, at the age of 27, Professor H.S. “Shel” Stillwell founded the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Illinois and remained head of the department for 32 years. Stillwell was influential in the design of the first ramjet-powered missile and highly respected for his contributions to aerospace engineering education.

These fellowships are awarded to entering and continuing students by the Department of Aerospace Engineering. For entering students, selection is based on application and supporting documents. Awards to continuing students are based on academic and research performance. Selection of fellowship recipients is made by the Department of Aerospace Engineering’s Graduate Admissions Committee.

Aerospace Engineering Alumni Advisory Board Fellowship

This fellowship was established by the AE Alumni Advisory Board to recognize a graduate student who excels in research. Applicants must have passed their preliminary exam.

Faculty Outstanding Graduate Student Award

This award recognizes a graduate student for outstanding contributions to the teaching and/or research missions of the department.

Graduate Student Service Award

This is awarded to a student for service to the unit, beyond merely their academic and research responsibilities.

Harry H. and Lois G. Hilton Fellowship

This fellowship was established to provide support for graduate students with a preference to those who study aeroelasticity.

 

Captain Kenneth L. Herrick
Captain Kenneth L. Herrick

Kenneth Lee Herrick Memorial Award

Captain Kenneth L. Herrick received a BS from Illinois in aerospace engineering in 1969 and an MS in 1982. He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in 1970.
Capt. Herrick served on active duty as a navigator from 1971 until 1978 at Wurtsmith AFB, Mich. and Eielson AFB, Ala. He joined the Illinois Air National Guard in 1979. He had more than 2,300 flying hours to his credit.

Capt. Herrick's service while a member of the Illinois Air National Guard was considered exemplary.

This award is given to an AE graduate student based on outstanding academic and research performance in the AE department.

 

 

Preston A. Henne
Preston A. Henne

Preston A. Henne Aerodynamics Fellowship

Pres Henne graduated from Illinois with a degree in aerospace engineering in 1969, which led to a career in which he became one the world leaders in aerodynamic design.  Henne is an AIAA Fellow and was inducted into the University of Illinois' Grainger College of Engineering Hall of Fame in 2012. 

This fellowship is awarded annually to a graduate student whose research is primarily focused on aerodynamics and design.Applicants must have passed their qualifying exam.
