Why did you choose to study at UIUC?
The summer before applying to colleges, I attended the GAMES camp for aerospace at UIUC, an experience that significantly influenced my decision to study here. The personalized tour of the engineering campus and conversations with professors revealed the university's commitment to cutting-edge research and collaboration with industry leaders.
I got to learn about the various registered student organizations which were involved with many exciting technical projects with immense potential. UIUC's proximity to home and its diverse community, encompassing students from various backgrounds and cultures, resonated with my desire to establish lifelong connections. Additionally, the excellence of UIUC's engineering program, with renowned faculty and innovative research initiatives, helped with my decision to commit to UIUC, which is not only a university but a dynamic community fostering intellectual growth and real-world impact.
Why aerospace engineering?
Choosing aerospace engineering at UIUC was ideal for me due to its intimate program size, fostering personal connections with professors. Initially torn between computer science and mechanical engineering, I discovered the perfect blend during a camp that unveiled aerospace's diverse world, providing the freedom to explore various engineering facets—from planes and rockets to satellites and drones. It's a field that challenges me, and I find its dynamic nature both intriguing and compelling.
What excites me most about aerospace is its futuristic impact; it's not solely about cutting-edge technology but also an opportunity for me to be innovative and make a substantial difference. From pursuing a private pilot's license to envisioning next-gen aircraft and spacecraft, I see my creativity playing a significant role.
The intersection of aerospace with business, government, and leadership led me to delve into technology and management as well. Looking ahead, my goal is to bridge the technical and organizational aspects, enhancing my behind-the-scenes experience with an MBA and JD. It's more than just studying; it's about becoming part of a transformative industry where my passion for innovation can truly thrive. I am thrilled to have chosen aerospace engineering, finding the perfect balance between technical expertise and business acumen through the knowledge and experience gained in engineering, computer science, and technology management over the last few years.
What helped you choose your specialty?
Although there wasn't a specific course or professor that singularly influenced my choice, the combination of my major and minor classes collectively shaped my academic journey and influenced the path I want to pursue. These different but complimentary classes provided me with a diverse set of skills that I now intend to apply in my future endeavors.
The collaborative and motivating environment created by the department, programs, and clubs I was involved with played a crucial role in my development. It inspired me to continue working in team settings, fostering a strong desire to contribute to collaborative projects and further motivated me to pursue higher education and further my learning journey.
What projects have you worked on that standout?
I've had the opportunity to work on many standout projects during my academic journey. One of my capstone projects involved a technical and business integrated collaboration with Boeing and it was a very notable experience for me. In my other capstone project, I had the chance to design a satellite constellation with my peers, offering a holistic view of how various engineering disciplines seamlessly come together. These projects not only enhanced my technical expertise, diving into specific aerospace, business, or programming subjects, but also provided valuable insights into the intricate interplay of leadership, teamwork, and industry dynamics.
Navigating through presentations, understanding the role of government, and considering financial aspects illuminated the broader context of the aerospace industry. These experiences not only expanded my technical knowledge but also revealed my capacity for leadership and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing complex challenges.
Describe something you are particularly proud of.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to reflect on my time at Illinois, and one aspect that stands out to me is the adaptation of my organizational and time management skills in my ability to be well-rounded. My junior year, I started working toward two minors. I had to overload and take 18 credits multiple semesters, which added three extra classes each semester. Juggling classes for my major in aerospace and the two minors made it a challenge.
My work in various technical clubs, taking on concurrent leadership roles, and engaging in extracurricular activities like intramural sports and dance has been a rewarding journey.
Balancing these commitments and maintaining good grades while going to the gym or participating in social or cultural events has taught me the importance of effective time management.
I've also had the chance to lead engineering camps and be an Engineering Learning Assistant for which I helped teach ENG 100, the engineering orientation course. It was a humbling experience that allowed me to contribute to the community. believe in continuous learning, and this journey has shown me the value of staying grounded while striving for personal and academic excellence.
Did you have any internships or study abroad experiences?
I had the opportunity to undertake two dynamic engineering internships at T-Mobile, gaining very valuable hands-on experience. Additionally, I embarked on study abroad experiences in Brazil and Germany, where I participated in engineering and business combined projects/competitions and visited local companies, fostering cross-cultural collaboration and broadening my perspective.
Working with people from diverse backgrounds was super-duper cool, offering a unique blend of cultural exchange and real-world application of my academic knowledge. These experiences not only enriched my understanding of the global engineering landscape but also made learning both fun and enlightening.
What extracurricular experience is memorable for you?
I loved being a part of Women in Aerospace and when I took on the role of Outreach Director, I was responsible for planning and running GLASS Day, which stands for Girls Learning Air and Space Sciences. It has been a particularly significant and meaningful extracurricular experience for me. It holds importance as I am passionate about raising awareness among girls about STEM, particularly aerospace. Having discovered the wonders of aerospace through a camp, I understand the value of ensuring others don't miss out on such opportunities.
Organizing GLASS Day allowed me to create a fun and engaging day for kids, complete with mini projects, aerospace lessons, and activities. Providing them with a platform to ask questions, connect with others, and enjoy the day with games, prizes, and food was incredibly fulfilling. It's a small way to give back to the community and make a positive impact by fostering interest and knowledge in aerospace among young minds.
What’s next for you?
In the immediate future, my plan is to work in Chicago for a couple of years, gaining valuable experience in the professional world. During this time, I aim to travel, meet new people, and spend quality time with friends, family, and loved ones. My goal is to maintain a continuous learning mindset, both in the workplace and through personal endeavors, including side projects that align with my interests. Beyond this, I am considering furthering my education with an MBA/JD program, but for now, I am focused on making the most of my time, broadening my horizons, and building a strong foundation for my future endeavors.
