Fakhreddine Karray, Ph.D. ’89, is currently a university research chair professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He is also the Loblaws research chair in artificial intelligence and the co-director of the Waterloo AI Institute.

He was recently named an IEEE Fellow for his major contributions to the field of intelligent systems.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

Karray’s current research interests are in the areas of operational artificial intelligence, cognitive machines, natural human-machine interaction, autonomous and intelligent systems with applications to cognitive and self-aware machines and social robots, predictive analytics in supply chain management, and intelligent transportation systems.

In addition, Karray is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada and has been an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer.
