AE alumus Mike "Hopper" Hopkins, BS ‘92, will command NASA’s Crew-1 mission inside SpaceX's Crew Dragon spacecraft. He is scheduled to launch on Sat. Nov. 14 with crew members Shannon Walker, Victor Glover, and Soichi Noguchi. 

Crew-1 will join Expedition 1 at the International Space Station for a six-month mission to conduct microgravity science.

The Department of Aerospace Engineering is hosting a virtual launch viewing party on Saturday, November 14 beginning at 6:30 p.m. CST which is open to the public. The event is free, however, registration is required.

Leading up to the launch, AE faculty member Michael Lembeck will give a brief overview about the mission. He'll be joined by Michael Burghardt, BS ’85, former Commercial Crew Transportation Launch Segment Director and Jared Daum, BS ’11, NASA Parachute Hardware Team.

In addition to earning a bachelors' degree in the Dept. of Aerospace Engineering at UIUC in 1992, Hopkins was captain of the 1991 football team and was the university's 2014 commencement speaker. Read more about Hopkins...
