Biography

James Allison is an associate professor and the Jerry S. Dobrovolny Faculty Scholar at UIUC. He is a faculty member of the ISE and Aerospace Engineering (affiliate) departments. Prof. Allison holds MS (2004, ME | 2005, IOE) and Ph.D. (2008, ME) degrees from the University of Michigan. He also holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering (2003, University of Utah) and an AAS in Automotive Technology (1998, Weber State University). He is the co-author of over 150 research publications and the recipient of several awards, including the NSF CAREER Award, ASME Design Automation Young Investigator Award, ASME papers of distinction, and several teaching and advising awards. Previous experience includes work in the automotive and engineering software industries. Current research focuses on the creation and analysis of novel quantitative design methods for engineering systems that enable the identification of non-obvious high-performance system designs. Specific topics of study include: control co-design, system architecture design, and Spatial Packaging of Interconnected Systems with Physical Interactions (SPI2). His investigations span a wide range of application domains, including mechatronics, power electronics, wind/water renewable energy systems, spacecraft attitude control, intelligent structures, scramjet design, automotive systems, manufacturing, and fluid systems.

Professional Highlights

  • Prof. Allison is an internationally-recognized leader behind the impactful new era of control co-design (CCD), which has made possible completely new levels of integration and performance enhancement for design of actively controlled engineering systems. Prof. Allison's work in CCD has led to >$150M in government funding centered on CCD, including transformational advancements in offshore wind, hydrokinetic renewable energy systems, and carbon capture and use.
  • PI of multiple projects focused on revolutionizing how interconnected physical engineering systems are designed, including a UIUC Strategic Research Initiative award to support creation of a new center, a DARPA award, and multiple industry-funded projects.
  • PI of several related projects focused on a new technology for precision spacecraft attitude control that has resulted in multiple patents and a spinoff company (Samara Aerospace), including a NASA USIP CubeSat mission for LEO test, a NASA SBIR award, NSF grant funding, an NSF STTR award, a Space Force SBIR award, UIUC OTM proof of concept award (for increasing technology readiness), and multiple collaborative funding awards from JPL.
  • Prof. Allison was named the Jerry S. Dobrovolny Faculty Scholar in 2019.
