Carroll Elected as SPIE Fellow

Aerospace Engineering at Illinois Visiting Professor David L. Carroll has been elected a Fellow of the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

SPIE advances an interdisciplinary approach to the science and application of light. Members earn the distinction of Fellow when they have made considerable technical and scientific contributions in optics, photonics, optoelectronics, and imaging. Carroll was cited for achievements in high-energy lasers and photonics, as well as the education of scientists and engineers.

In addition to his work for the AE Department, Carroll is the President and co-founder of a small aerospace company, CU Aerospace, located in Champaign, Illinois. CU Aerospace is principally a government contractor working in high-energy lasers, space propulsion, nano-satellite fabrication, self-healing composite materials, astrodynamics, and other advanced aerospace technologies.

Carroll earned three degrees from AE: a bachelor’s in 1985, a master’s in 1986, and a PhD in 1992.

He served as the Chair for the Plasmadynamics and Lasers Technical Committee of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) from 2011 – 2013.  He was inducted as an AIAA Fellow in 2011.
